Congo celebrates 60th independence anniversar

President Denis Sassou Nguesso has underlined the progress made in his country, a former French colony at a ceremony to mark the 60th freedom celebrations putting emphasis on the infrastructure built in the central African country since its freedom from the colonial power.
“At independence, our country did not have a single kilometer of asphalt pavement… today, we have a total of 3,111 kilometers (1,933 miles) of asphalt roads, with crossings on practically all our major rivers,” he said in a speech to the nation.
The President also highlighted an increase in the number of large hospitals from one in 1960 to currently eight among several others still under construction. He further spoke on the advancement of education through building schools. He said the number of completed schools is currently sitting at 2,000 across the country.
It was however sad for some to hear the President speak of road construction when in fact corruption is taking center stage across the country stifling development.
“When Sassou is satisfied with road construction, it’s a joke” said Roch Euloge Nzobo, coordinator at the local NGO Human Rights and Development Circle.
“In 60 years of independence, Congo does not even have a motorway, …. Corruption is endemic throughout the country”
Despite the long term of service which some may see as marred with corruption and misrule, President Sassou Nguesso has been nominated by the Congolese Labor Party (PCT) for the same position in the coming elections set for March 2021. His 2016 re-election was highly contested and caused unrest in the central African country.
The country is rich in oil but the economy has seen a nose dive due to the fall of oil prices in 2014 contributing to political and socio-economic challenges. This has been further worsened by the Corona virus pandemic ravaging communities across the globe.
President Denis Sassou Nguesso has been in power for 35 years.
