Education minister was laid offf on Thursday after announcing a plan to procure sweets for students to take the edge off the bitterness of a herbal tea the president says is a coronavirus remedy.

Minister Rijasoa Andriamanana was ordering US$2.2 million (S$3 million) worth of sweets to ingest with the Covid-Organics concoction, which some experts have already warned is useless against Covid-19.

She stated that “a purchase of sweets and lollipops” had been made and that all students to receive three each, adding that it was for the “bitter taste” of the tea, which President Andry Rajoelina has been pushing, saying it is the country’s “green gold” which will “change course of history”.

To this day the potential benefits of Covid-Organics, have not been verified by any scientific study.

That such expense was going to sweets sparked wide outrage, fanned by the press, and the order was cancelled.

The minister tried to defend the plan, but it was not approved by the Cabinet, which relieved her of her duties in a statement.
