President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in press-conference in Istanbul on Friday justified the reason for the presence of Turkey-allied troops at the territory of Libya by saying that military units participate in military exercises.

Recep Erdogan for the first time confirmed that pro-Turkish Syrian fighters were present in Libya alongside Ankara’s training personnel.

“Turkey is there with a training force. There are also people from the Syrian National Army,” Erdogan told the media, referring to fighters from factions in the Syrian military opposition and groups fighting against the Syrian Arab Armed Forces.

In December 2019, the Ankara began sending Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army (SNA/TFSA) troops to Libya as part of its efforts to bolster the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord amid the Second Libyan Civil War. Several SNA/TFSA member groups volunteered for the operation despite strong objections of the Syrian Interim Government.
