The national power utility announced Thursday that stage 2 load shedding was to be implemented starting 9 am on February 20 owing to a capacity shortage. Power is expected to be back at 6 am on February 22, Eskom officials say.
Hundreds of homes and thousands of residents are expected to be without electricity for at least 2 and a half days.
Eskom says they were ‘making use of emergency diesel and water reserves to supplement the shortage with a high probability of power cuts over the weekend.’
Unplanned breakdowns and outages grew to 11 938MW on Thursday morning while on Wednesday morning it was at 11 302MW, the utility reported.
The cash-strapped utility has warned of an increased likelihood of power cuts over the next 18 months as it conducts maintenance on its fleet of ageing power plants.
