All Basotho Convention (ABC), Lesotho’s ruling party, issued an ultimatum to the current Prime Minister demanding his resignation in two days, stating he must leave his office by Thursday as his wife had been arrested on charges in relation to the murder of her rival.
Thomas Thabane’s current wife Maesaiah Thabane, aged 42, made her court appearance on Tuesday this week over the murder of the prime minister’s former wife, who was shot and killed two days before the premier was sworn into office in 2017.
On Monday, February 17, the supreme decision-making body of Thabane’s All Basotho Convention (ABC) party during the meeting reached an agreement on the term of the Prime Minister’s resignation. They have set a deadline for the 80-year-old Thabane to step down by Thursday, February 20.
“We cannot afford to have him any longer in office and we think it’s only for the best,” the spokesperson for the ABC party, Montoeli Masoetsa, said.
The party had last month urged the premier to resign, after police investigations linked his mobile number to communication records from the scene of the murder of his estranged wife.
The prime minister promised to leave on grounds of advanced health, but did not provide a timeline for his resignation.
