Representatives of civil resistance groups from among the residents of two localities of Sirba and El Geneina in West Darfur, situated along the border with Chad, took to the streets demanding that local authorities tighten control over the illicit trafficking of firearms in the region, as well as direct adequate efforts to fight organised crime.
The marches have been carried out in front of the state government secretariat in El Geneina, the West Darfur state capital.
Growing popular discontent with the authorities’ failure to act complemented with the recent killings, rapes and thefts in the region. The residents condemn the authorities and demand that the perpetrators have to be arrested and brought to justice.
Hasan Haroun, a member of the Sirba resistance committee, told the local media that they handed over a memorandum to the governor in which they demanded the arrest of the perpetrators of the murders and rapes that occurred recently in Sirba locality.
They also want the police headquarters in the localities to have a higher status and more senior officers.
