A division for combating the activities of the illegal miners of Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has carried operation ‘Chikorokoza Ngachipere’ to end illicit gold panners’ activities in Manicaland province, Mutasa district. As a result, hundreds of miners have been arrested.
On Monday morning the law enforcers recovered a lot of equipment during the raids and detained several hundred people who are believed to be engaged in artisanal mining in the area. The amount of technical equipment that has been seized prooves that the illegal mining activities have huge sponsorship and the police “will not move out of mining areas until they stamp out illegal activities”.
The minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs, Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri, has also attended the mining area and observed as the operation unfolding.
She commended the police and the and members of the Manicaland Joint Command for engaging in the operation that seeks to bring sanity in mining areas. Minister Muchinguri says there is however need for the ministry of mines to urgently come on board and support the regularisation of mining activities shortly after Chikorokoza Ngachipere operations to pave way for controlled and environment-friendly mining activities.
