Botswana’s court of appeal has dismissed an application filed by the opposition aiming to challenge the general elections result.
Last year, the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), the main opposition party in the diamond-rich state, suffered a сrushing blow in the polls receiving only 15 seats in the parliament while the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) secured 38 mandates.
The UDC members questioned the integrity of the elections citing irregularities and went to court in order to defend their rights. However, their appeal was dismissed on Wednesday.
“We have no jurisdiction to entertain these appeals,” head judge Ian Kirby ruled.
The party has not announced further steps yet and will soon deliver a statement on the matter.
