The North and South Kivu provinces in the Democratic Republic of Congo have gone through what is believed “the deadliest month for civilian deaths ever recorded.”
Kivu Security Tracker (KST), the Congo Research Group’s project, stated people had been killed by the local armed groups and Islamist militants with most deaths reported in the restive Beni region.
According to the KST, the perpetrators went on a rampage shooting the locals after the launch of the Congolese military offensive.
The operation, however, borne fruit as the army managed to drive back the enemy from the key positions.
“This attack successfully led to the rebellion retreating from the bases it had occupied since early 2019,” KST’s statement reads.
