Six Mali soldiers were confirmed dead on Thursday following an overnight attack near the border with Burkina Faso.
According to the reports, a group of “unidentified armed men” ambushed the troops in Dioungani starting a shootout that lasted for about several hours.
It is suspected that the local jihadists stay behind the incident, but the investigation into the matter has neither confirmed nor refuted this information yet.
The West African country has been battling an Islamist insurgency for years. To aid the national army, 4, 500 French troops were deployed in the region backed by 13, 000-strong UN peacekeeping forces. However, their position still frequently become the main target of the radical Islamists.
