Ethiopia has set a preliminary date for the upcoming national vote planning to hold the major political event on 16 August 2020.

The elections, the first such ones under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, will determine the parliament and regional councils’ compositions.

Initially, Abiy announced the elections would be carried out in May or June; however, they were further postponed in order to give the authorities and parties more time for preparations.

43-year-old Abiy, one of the youngest national leaders on the continent, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year for his contribution in setting peace between Eritrea and Ethiopia as well as building democracy in the Eastern African state.
