The Harare police together with the local authorities have halted the work of several butcheries across the city as their meat is believed to be contaminated.
The facilities in Mabvuku, Dzivarasekwa, Highfield, Southlea Park, Warren Park, Glen View, and Budiriro were closed while their products were taken for laboratory analyses.
It is alleged that these manufacturers used unlicensed meat preservatives, in particular formalin, which could put the customers’ health at risk, Deputy Harare police provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Webster Dzvova explained.
Such chemicals prevented the decomposition of the slaughtered animals’ bodies while allowing the businesses to extend their shelf life.
The officials have since urged the citizens living in Zimbabwe’s capital to avoid buying suspiciously-looking meat and use only reliable stores.
