Almaas Elman Ali, a well-known Somalian activist and the sister of Nobel Prize nominee Ilwad Elman, has been killed by what is said to be a stray bullet.

The woman was traveling by car inside the heavily fortified airport compound in Mogadishu when the vehicle was shot at. According to the reports, Elman succumbed to the wound in minutes before any services could reach the scene.

“A stray bullet hit her, and she died within a few minutes,” Somalia security official Mohamed Omartold the press.

The area was heavily flooded by the UN and AU military forces, but it is yet unknown who accidentally killed the activist. Moreover, no gunfire was registered prior to the incident.

A Canadian and Somalian citizen, Elman, used to work at the Somali Embassy in Kenya and has recently begun consulting for the European Union delegation to Somalia.
