King Sigcawu, the ruler of the AmaXhosa nation, died during the early hours of Thursday.
This is according to the king’s uncle Nkosi Xhanti Sigcawu, who confirmed the tragic news to the local press.
Yesterday, the 51-year-old monarch had been admitted to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha, the Eastern Cape, but failed to recover and passed away at 5:30am.
The royal family is expected to soon address the people and make a statement over the matter. Until then, their representative urged the community to respect their privacy.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane extended condolences over the matter stating he was currently on his way to the royal palace.
“He was not just a king for himself, he was a king for his people who was always out there articulating the interests of his people. As a government we’ve lost a serious social partner in him, a man with a very solid contribution on how we’re shaping the province,” Mabuyane stated.
