The senior employees of the South African power utility Eskom will gather today for an urgent meeting to discuss the ways of recovering the national grid.
According to the reports, the company had to implement Stage 2 power cuts on Thursday night due to the loss of three generating units.
In order to meet the demand and level the electricity supply during daytime, Eskom had to use all of its reserves, in particular, open-cycle gas turbines and pumped-storage hydroelectric plants.
“That necessitated us to use our emergency reserves throughout the day. Then there were very critical low levels later on in the day. We looked at stage two to replenish them for at least some supply,” Eskom’s Dikatso Mothae said in a statement.
The residents were previously plunged into darkness last month due to the critical capacity levels.
