On Thursday morning, a group of protesters looted two trucks on the N1 highway in De Doorns, the Western Cape.
The protest was initially arranged by the local farm workers who demanded higher salaries. The unrest then escalated with the rioters stoning the passing vehicles. They then proceeded to loot two stationary trucks stealing big-screen TVs.
Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa urged the motorists to choose alternative routes as the N1 had to be closed in both directions.
“It’s unsafe to use the N1 until such time as the police are able to get this thing under control. Motorists should avoid the area if possible,” he explained. “Situation is currently very tense and volatile. There is a high police presence.”
Police spokesperson Sgt Noloyiso Rwexana advised the police were following up on the people who had looted the trucks. However, no arrests have been made so far.
