The video of a robbery has helped Cape Town’s police to apprehend the suspect and recover the stolen phone.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at the intersection of Halt and Voortrekker roads in Elsies River when the driver of an SUV stopped the vehicle at a robot. As his window was rolled down, it was easy for the passer-by to reach in and grab his phone. The culprit then ran away and hitched a taxi to flee the scene.
Fortunately, the whole ordeal was captured on camera. The footage had soon gone viral and mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith forwarded it to the City of Cape Town’s public emergency communications centre, as well as the law enforcement department on Thursday morning.
Within an hour, the perpetrator was arrested. He actually was riding the same taxi and wearing the same clothes as in the video.
“The plainclothes unit within law enforcement followed and managed to find the suspect and arrest him, along with other persons of interest,” Smith confirmed.
The stolen phone was reportedly among the suspected loot. His owner had also been located and was to appear at the Goodwood police station to lay charges against the suspect.
