The Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) in Zambia have been forced to shut down one of their smelters earlier than planned as the specialists detected a leak which had resulted in a huge steam release.

According to provisional liquidator Milingo Lungu, the incident on Wednesday was provoked by the hot copper mass which spilled from the leak in the equipment and vapourized the water.

“We have therefore decided to shut down the smelter for annual maintenance two days ahead of schedule,” Lungu explained the matter to the media.

The maintenance process which includes several adjustments and replacements in the smelter schemes will go on for at least 37 days and is expected to end on November 15.
