An armed group robbed a Dion Wired store at Cresta mall in Randburg, Gauteng, and made off with electronics after wounding a security guard.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters, about seven suspects were involved in the robbery.
“The robbers allegedly fired shots as they fled, wounding a security guard who was rushed to hospital,” Peters advised.
The ER24 statement confirmed the incident.
“A man, believed to be in his 30s, was left seriously injured this afternoon following a robbery at Cresta Mall in Randburg. ER24 paramedics, along with another service, arrived on the scene at 16:05 to find the local authorities already in attendance. Medics were led to the clinic were the patient had been taken to,” the statement read. “On assessment, medics found that the man had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper leg and was in a serious condition.The man was treated for his injuries and provided with pain-relief medication before he was transported to a private hospital for further care. Local authorities are on the scene for further investigations.”
The perpetrators reportedly used two get-away vehicles, a Nissan NP200 and a white VW Polo hatchback. The members of the anti-gang unit noticed the first vehicle and chased it along the N1.
“A shootout ensued and one suspect was declared dead on the scene, one [was] arrested and one managed to evade arrest and is still on the run,” Peters revealed.
The police recovered two firearms and the vehicle. One of the firearms had allegedly been used during the robbery, another one was sent for ballistic tests to establish whether it could be linked to any previous crimes.
The police are still searching for the other suspects and the second vehicle which was last seen being driven in the direction of Pimville, Soweto.
