Yesterday, at about 1:30pm, a train caught fire at the Glencairn station while going from Simon’s Town to Cape Town. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
It is still not known what had caused the blaze that damaged the train’s motorised locomotive and three carriages. The firefighters managed to put it out only at 4:05pm.
The police and Metrorail’s technical, operations and security teams were also on the scene. According to police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, a case of malicious damage to property is under investigation.
The train services were affected by the fire. The commuters were advised to make use of own alternative transport between Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town.
