An uncontrollable crowd of people have crushed ten FRELIMO supporters to death and injured more than 80 at a campaign rally of the party’s main candidate and the current Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi.
The incident described as total chaos occurred on the 25 de Junho Stadium in the northern city of Nampula, where hundreds of citizens gathered on Wednesday to support the national leader ahead of the upcoming elections.
According to the reports, the residents thrilled by the event pushed not only each other but also the stadium staff and soon fully filled the area meant for a much smaller crowd. As the rally ended, all of them rushed to the exit, despite the calling for calm, knocking and trampling those in their way.
“Unfortunately 10 of our party’s militants died,” Frelimo party said in a statement while also confirming that 85 had been injured in the stampede.
The political organisation representatives further extended condolences to the families of the deceased, saying it was a big loss for the party and the country in general.
