The video of a light aircraft making an unscheduled landing at South Africa’s busiest airport in Johannesburg has raised serious concerns about safety.
According to OR Tambo International (ATNS) spokesperson Percy Morokane, the incident occurred on August 29.
“We view this incident in a serious light and would like to assure the flying public of our commitment to their safety – at all times,” he declared.
The pilot of the RV-10, who landed on the taxiway dangerously close to the engines of a commercial plane already preparing to take off, claims he was just dropping off a friend who needed to catch a connecting flight.
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has opened an investigation as the pilot is reported not to have filed a flight plan as required by the SACAA’s air traffic service procedures.
