The 25-year-old woman responsible for the tragedy that shook the community of Klarinet, eMalahleni, Mpumalanga, in December 2018 is to appear in the Middelburg High Court for pre-sentencing.
Yesterday, Zinhle Maditla pleaded guilty to premeditated murder of her four children.
“I plead guilty freely without undue influence. I admit that I did unlawfully and intentionally kill my children on the 27th December 2018.”
The court heard she had found the father of two of them with another woman and decided to kill herself along with her children by lacing their food with rat poison.
“I went back home I sat in the taxi emotional and crying. I saw a hawker selling rat poison I took R10 and bought poison with intention to kill myself and my children.”
Maditla later mixed the poison with achaar and fed it to three older children with bread.
“I smeared the poison on my breast and breast fed my baby,” she added.
As a result, Minenhle, 8, Blessing, 7, Shaniqua, 3, and 11-month-old Ethen died. Their mother claimed she had also eaten the poisoned food hoping it would take her life as well. However, it hadn’t happened and she went out to drink with her friends the next day telling the neighbours the kids were at their father’s place.
On 30 December 2018, soon after the decomposing bodies had been discovered in the rented room, Maditla handed herself over to the police.
