A shocking video of a Limpopo school teacher slapping his pupils across the face went viral on Wednesday. The principal whose actions were filmed by one of the students has since resigned.
It is alleged that the man resorted to corporal punishment when some of the pupils had not completed his physical science assignment on time.
The incident that occurred in Bopedi Bapedi Secondary School in Ga-Marishana, Sekhukhune district, Limpopo, is now under investigation.
“A team of district officials has been dispatched to the school to start with the investigations that will establish the facts and determine the course of action to be taken in this regard,” MEC for education Polly Boshielo confirmed. “It is unacceptable to openly break the law in this fashion. Corporal punishment is a thing of the past and has been outlawed for years now. It cannot be tolerated.”
Surprisingly, some pupils support the principal.
“He is a very friendly person and always in a good mood. Watch the video, you will see there was no tension or any sign of bitterness from the principal,” one of them claimed. “He can’t fold his hands when pupils are becoming lazy and not do their school work. He wants us all to succeed.”
After studying for three years in this school, another pupil added he had never seen or heard of such actions performed by the principal.
Boshielo announced that the principal had resigned. Yet, DA provincial leader Jacques Smalle believes that is not enough.
“Despite the principal resigning, we believe he should be criminally charged for his actions,” he declared. “Teachers are not allowed to disregard the law with regard to corporal punishment and may never use it as a form of discipline.”
