Crime in Cape Town is currently a very hot topic, but during the physicals, the strangers became each other’s cheerleaders and mentors as they struggled through the tests for the desired job.
To pass the physicals and continue to the written tests, the applicants have to do:
- A 2.4 kilometre run;
- Shuttle runs;
- Motorbike lift test to determine whether they are strong enough to hold a motorbike steady.
Some already had jobs, others spoke of being unemployed for several years, but all were passionate about passing.
One participant told:
“I want a career, not just a job.”
And many said they were hoping to fulfil their childhood dream of becoming a policing officer.
