The minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu, has spoken out against the Economic Freedom Front (EFF) after the party’s leader Julius Malema, suggested that there were efforts to protect Pravin Gordhan from the Public Protector’s office.
Malema confronted President Cyril Ramaphosa during the budget vote in Parliament on Wednesday, about some alleged “tendencies” to defy the office of the Public Protector’s office in efforts to protect Public Enterprises Minister Gordhan.
The EFF leader painted Gordhan as a corrupt individual and reiterated that the EFF did not fear him and would willingly take him on.
Mthembu tried explained why the EFF was on an “anarchic pursuit” of Pravin Gordhan. “President, you sent minister Pravin to go and clean out our state-owned entities. I can assure you that in his attempts to clean up SOEs, he stepped on some toes of EFF cronies,” he said.
He also added that the party was racist and had deep hatred for Indians.
Mthembu also mentioned allegations that the EFF was funded from proceeds of illegal cigarette trade.
“And it’s these friends who are being pursued by our tax collection agency and now Pravin becomes a scapegoat. Honourable president, do not be deterred by these howlers,” he said.
