The Chipata High Court has sentenced a 25-year-old woman of Chipata area to 25 years in prison with hard labour for child trafficking.
Esther Phiri appeared before Judge Elita Phiri Mwikisa to be tried for trafficking a 14-year-old girl.
The court was informed that, on July 3, 2018, Phiri acting together with other criminals had willfully and unlawfully trafficked a 14-year-old child of the same area for the purposes of engaging the child in work.
The child had been allegedly transported to Lusaka where she was raped and impregnated.
Phiri, represented by Legal Aid Council Sally Bwalya, pleaded with the court for condescension as she was a first time offender.
However, judge Mwikisa said the offence committed by Phiri was too serious, so to help her reform she was sentenced to 25 years with hard labour.
