Following a video showing inmates consuming drugs in prison, the Correctional Services Department launched an investigation which revealed that several prison officials were linked to drug smuggling in Durban’s Westville Prison.

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola gave the update on Wednesday morning before delivering his budget speech at the National Assembly in Cape Town.

Lamola said nine officials were suspended pending investigations and the department would discipline the officials accordingly.

“Out of the nine officials, four are currently suspended, three are placed alternatively, one is yet to return to work, and the other official could not be suspended based on the response that he provided to the investigation team,” he said.

“I did mention that errant officials involved in the smuggling of drugs and other offences will not be spared any mercy.”

The minister added that the investigations were continuing until the department eradicates bad behaviour in the correctional service system.
