Seven young rangers got injured in the Mopani Camp in Kruger National Park when a wooden deck they were standing on collapsed.
According to SANParks spokesperson Janine Raftopoulos, the accident happened late on Thursday morning.
“Wooden deck next to pub collapsed causing 14 people to fall down. Seven young people were transported to hospitals,” Maponya911 paramedic Jaco Gericke posted on Facebook.
Two victims were airlifted by KNP and the Mpumalanga EMS helicopters in critical condition. Five more with less serious injuries were transported to hospitals by ambulances.
“Part of the wood of the deck had been eroded and, unfortunately, it did give in while people were standing on it…” Raftopoulos claimed. “The park is looking at fortification and refurbishment of that area given what happened, unfortunately, today.”
Isaac Phaala, Regional Communications Manager at SANParks, added that the investigation was underway to establish the cause of the accident.
