Unrest shuts traffic in Soweto

On Thursday morning, the residents of Soweto, Johannesburg, blocked the main roads in and out of the town demanding justice.

The protesters burn tyres on the streets and barricade the roads with rubble. The traffic is heavily affected in the area, including public transport delays.

The residents allegedly protest against the increase of crimes, especially murders, in Soweto. They say instead of being held accountable the offenders get away with their crimes.

The police are monitoring the situation closely.

It has also been reported that the residents of Roodepoort and Springs started a protest action of their own. It is yet unclear what caused the disorder there.
