Yesterday, a truck transporting R2.5 million worth of clothing to Cape Town crashed on the N1 near De Doorns in the Western Cape after a rock had broken his windshield. The driver died in the ensued looting.
The reports state the incident occurred at around 5am. The rock thrown at the driver hit the steering wheel causing the control loss and subsequent crash. Christopher Kgomo was still alive after the accident but was trampled to death by the looters.
“The Time Link driver who sadly passed away in the early hours of [Sunday] morning – our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time. A life taken too soon. A life taken at its peak,” the SA Long-Distance Truckers posted on their Facebook page.
According to CEO Kamal Mitoo, the truck had a second driver resting on a bunk bed at the time of the crash. He had tried to take control of the truck but failed.
“[Stoning trucks] is becoming the norm,” he added.
The police have opened a case of malicious damage to property but Time Link Cargo officials want it to be changed to a murder charge.
A similar case happened in Durban on the N3. Fortunately, the driver managed to control the truck and proceed without stopping and causing an accident.
