Durban universities, schools halt classes due to severe flooding


Severe downpours that grappled several areas across KwaZulu-Natal has forced education institutions in Durban to temporary suspend classes in order to ensure the safety of all students.

This, in particular, applies to the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Mangosuthu University of Technology and several local schools. All of them have closed their entrances for learners and have been putting efforts to overcome the disaster occurred.

“Staff are urged to exercise caution and use own judgement when traveling as reports have confirmed that most roads in Durban have been damaged due to heavy rains,” UKZN spokesperson Normah Zondo said.  A similar message with warnings towards both staff and students was posted on MUT’s Twitter page.

According to the preliminary information, two schools in the South parts of Durban was damaged by the floodwater. The Department of Education is now waiting for emergency services to brief its representatives on the situation in order to choose the right course of action related to the matter.
