Modern equipment at Chilonga irrigation system in Zambia has been lying abandoned after its work was completely blocked by siltation.
According to the media reports, massive silt and sludge pieces pushed the river to more than 300m away from its previous course, blocking the pump from drawing water and irrigation of more than 200 hectares of land.
The authorities explained that decades of farming resulted in the poor state of the scheme in which it stayed now as farmers dumped tonnes of sand into the river, forcing it to switch its course. While the local maintenance teams appear to be aware of the issue, no restoration work has been done yet.
Gwanetsa and Masvingo Provincial Affairs minister Ezra Chadzamira on Saturday visited the problematic area and assured the matter would be resolved as soon as possible.
“I will make sure that whoever is responsible will be brought to book and explain why there are no engineers working on the project at the moment,” Chadzamira said.
