One of the brightest drivers in Formula One history Fernando Alonso decided to discover new talents inside him and completed a two-day evaluation at the wheel of a Dakar Rally-winning Toyota Hilux in South Africa last week.
TG Racing South Africa organised the test drive for the champion and hired former Dakar Rally winner Giniel de Villiers as Alonso’s mentor to make the experience outstanding. According to Glyn Hall, TG Racing South Africa Team Principal, Alonso’s skills that he showed during two-day event were clearly great and left no one indifferent.
“It has been a fantastic experience for the team to work with a driver of Fernando’s calibre. It’s easy to see why he has enjoyed so much success in circuit racing; he was very well prepared for this test and made a huge effort to learn as much as possible in the two days,” Hall said.
Toyota’s Hilux that won the 2019 Dakar Rally while driven by Nasser Al-Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel is powered by a 5.0-litre V8 engine, delivering 385hp (288kW) and producing 620Nm of torque. Alonso piloted the vehicle on two lay-outs around the desert, one of 8km and the other of 17km.
