A total of 36 people were detained by the police officers in Polokwane.
According to the traffic officer Vorster Senyolo, he, during the stop-and-go operation, saw a truck driver who was avoiding getting pulled over.
The officer started following the truck, which did not have a number plate.
While inspecting the truck, Senyolo found 36 Malawian passengers hiding inside.
“I got on to the back of the truck wanting to investigate the cargo and those passengers were hiding under some water bottles. We impounded the vehicle and the drivers, as well as passengers, were detained,” Senyolo SAID.
According to the driver of the truck, the undocumented people were travelling to Joburg.
“In our country, there is no work, and there is no way to make a living, so I brought these people here to visit Johannesburg and if they are lucky, they can find some work and make money,” he explained.
The owner and the driver of the truck was charged with illegally transporting passengers and driving without a driver’s licence.
