The Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations (known as Hawks) has launched an operation to raid the house and office of Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Mongameli Bobani.
The official’s lawyer, Danie Gouws, confirmed that the officers started searching the property in the Bobani’s office on Tuesday morning and proceeded to his house afterwards, reportedly seizing only his wife’s laptop.
“They wanted to confiscate the mayor’s cellphone, but we refused to hand it over as it was not listed in the warrant,” Gouws SAID.
While Gouws said that the measure did not bring any result, the mayor himself remained silent to media. According to the lawyer, the controversial politic who faced corruption, fraud and money laundering charges is fully committed to cooperate with the police as he has been very confident of his innocence.
The charges were laid by DA’s Athol Trollip in October last year.
