The Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture will hear the testimony of a former Denel CEO Riaz Saloojee. The commission session is expected to be held on Wednesday.
The Zondo commission is interested in Saloojee’s activities because of his alleged connection with the Gupta family. Riaz Saloojee was fired from the state-owned company by the Daniel Mantsha-led board in 2015 for alleged malfeasance and financial fraud.
The investigation says that the irregularities in the arms manufacturer’s profit statement could have been the possible causes for Saloojee’s sacking. Meanwhile, Saloojee disagrees with these charges. He says that his suspension was necessary to allow the Guptas do business with Denel.
As the commission’s advocate Leah Gcabashe emphasises, Saloojee’s testimony is decisive.
“Believe me, we have quite a bit of work on our plates. I think it will be an all-day hearing. There’s a lot that he has to tell the commission,” Gcabashe said.
