Breaking the record: 48 parties to compete on May 8, 2019

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that 48 parties submitted their candidate lists and paid deposits on time to contest the national elections. The final number of participating parties is higher by 19 compared to the general elections of 2014.

Gauteng boasts the largest number of political parties to contest provincial legislatures – 36, the smallest number belongs to the Northern Cape – 21.

More than 26 million voters are registered this year, 55% are women and 45% – men. That represents 74.6% of the total voting age population.

22 924 voting stations will host voting and counting on May 8, 2019.

29 335 voters are going to cast their vote abroad in advance, on April 27, 2019. That’s 10% more than in 2014.
