SA National Assembly to dissolve ahead of May elections

The South African National Assembly adopted a resolution to dissolve ahead of the elections scheduled for May 8 as MPs’ terms initially set to expire two days after the announced date.

According to the statement, the document will allow president Cyril Ramaphosa to set the date officially.

The dissolution, in turn, will not hinder the House work as the Constitution instructs officials to function until the eve of the elections. In relation to the decision, the majority of MPs also agreed to suspend Rules 333(2) and 351(2), which would have resulted in Bills and other business lapsing when the House is dissolved.
