Ramaphosa honored the SS MENDI victims

At the Armed Forces Day, the South African president Cyril Ramaphosa honored the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives during the fateful occasion of the SS MENDI on 21 February 1917.

He laid a wreath at the Lower Campus of the University of Cape Town by the SS Mendi Memorial. On 21 February 1917 over 600 South African men died in the icy waters of the English Channel, of whom 607 were from the South African Native Labour Corps and 33 – crew members.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is hosting Armed Forces Day (AFD) 2019 today in Cape Town. Today, a military parade and capability demonstration will be held in Cape Town. The parade will comprise marching and mechanized columns.
