Musician Kiernan Forbes, also known as AKA, showed solidarity towards the students at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits), who have recently protested over the registration and accommodation issues. The rapper has donated R100k and is going to handle out burgers and fries at the Wits on Monday.
Based on AKA’s posts on Twitter, his decision is not political and is only made to assist those students in need.
“I hope this will make other celebrities, private citizens and leaders, stop and think about what we can do to help these young people. This is not a political initiative, this is about demonstrating that we are the only ones who can find solutions for our own problems.
“I know that won’t fix all the issues facing our students but I think it’s a start, ”AKA said.
The week-long hunger strike performed by the university students was over on Friday after negotiations had brought peace to the conflict between the learners and the management. According to the Wits Students Representative Council (SRC), the university administration agreed to provide registration, accommodation, and food demanded.
