Durban specialists have rescued a newborn baby who was previously dumped in a stormwater drain in Newlands East. It took three hours to dig up a tunnel to the infant and free it from the trap.
Emergency services were alerted on Monday morning as local residents heard shrill cry coming from the underground dump. Soon teams from the SAPS Search and Rescue, eThekwini Fire Department, Metro Police, and various ambulance services arrived to help the child in danger.
After rescuing had been completed, the baby who is believed to be a girl, was examined by the medics on the scene. They decided to take her to the hospital for further treatment, so a medical helicopter was deployed to perform air transportation.
The police have been searching for a perpetrator behind the incident, however, no arrests have been made yet.
