A 55-year-old teacher from Valhalla Primary School in Centurion, Pretoria, is facing seven counts of sexual assault. On Friday, the man briefly appeared in the city Magistrate’s Court following an arrest held yesterday.
According to the reports, the teacher inappropriately touched his pupils aged 10 to 12.
For the time being, it’s unclear how many learners have become the victims of the crime as the incidents have started to occur since 2017 — soon after the educator had been appointed. However, according to the provincial education department, these are about 23 children.
The sexual assault cases were revealed when the members of the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) were giving a lesson on abuse theme. The officials urged to continue this kind of lessons as it benefits the community.
“We encourage metro officers to continue teaching our learners about abuse. If it was not because of them, we wouldn’t have known about these incidents,” Gauteng education department spokesperson Steve Mabona said.
