Johannesburg police warned local motorists to avoid the Kelvin area in Sandton on Friday. A traffic in the area was complicated by a violent protest with participants burning tyres.

According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, there are officers who are monitoring the situation and providing security at the intersection of Marlboro and Zinnia Drive.

Alexandra community members are burn tyres and throwing stones at passing cars. According to JMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the protests were caused by the informal settlements onto their land.

“Protestors are throwing stones and burning tyres. It appears to be a sort of service delivery protest and more officers are being sent on the scene.

They [protesters] are saying they are unhappy about shacks too close to their homes,” he pointed out.
