On Thursday, February 7, it has become known that Finance Minister Tito Mboweni has appointed a high-level panel to interview candidates for the position of the South African Revenue Service (Sars) Commissioner. It has been reported that the list of candidates will be submitted to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The South African President fired a former Sars commissioner Tom Moyane in September 2018, following the advice of the Nugent Commission of Inquiry.
The commission is known to consist of seven people, and its chairman is Trevor Manuel. The panel also includes Judge Dennis Davis of the Davis tax committee and Treasury director-general Ismael Momoniat, Sindi Mabaso-Koyana, Angela Bester, Fezekile Tshiqi and Thandi Orleyn.
According to the commission members, the new head of Sars should be competent and apolitical.
