The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has stopped working for an undefined period after a student had died in a standoff with the university private security.
According to the police reports, the 20-year-old learner, whose name allegedly is Mlungisi Madonsela, was shot dead during a student protest held on Tuesday.
Police officers from the nearby Berea police station have been investigating an murder case since yesterday afternoon, gathering evidence and interviewing incident witnesses.
In a statement released the university sent the deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends, also saying that the institution decided to suspend activities following the tragedy.
“The Durban University of Technology is saddened by the events of this afternoon where a student has passed on and a member of staff was left severely injured. The University sends its deepest condolences to the friends and family of the student. We also wish our colleague a speedy recovery. As a result of this tragic incident and many other violent altercations, the University Management has decided to close the University until further notice”
