A group of students, protesting over registration and accommodation issues at Wits University, is now demanding private security to leave them alone as the guards do not provide any safety measures but instead make the protesters nervous.
“We would like all this additional security to leave, we do not feel safe. They are supposed to make us feel safe, we feel less safe [and] threatened,” one of the students said.
On Monday, approximately 50 learners went on hunger strike, demanding a registration allowance for students with a historical debt. By a small demonstration, the protesters managed to bring some classes on the university’s West campus to a halt.
The private security deployment was engaged to prevent any further class disruptions.
