The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) condemned the posts within the social networks on the Hoërskool Driehoek tragedy, that claimed four pupils’ life. On Friday, more than 20 young learners were injured as the walkway at Hoërskool Driehoek in Vanderbijl Park collapsed.

Spokeswoman Gail Smith said that she has been shocked by insensitiveness and offensiveness of the comments, which appeared hours after the incident. According to her, one of the authors of those posts apparently is the Black First Land First party (BLF) and its secretary Lindsay Maasdorp, in particular.

“Kindness, compassion, and respect are basic human values which we should be extending to each other in a time of loss.  Death does not discriminate, grief cuts across race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nation, and culture,” said Smith.

She also added the commission is further examining the comments and will take them to the Equality Court for relief on utterances.
