On Friday, February 1, several senior police officers were dismissed on the charges of failing to prevent protests in Zimbabwe.
After the violent protests in Bulawayo followed by looting shops, the Senior Assistant Commissioner Happymore Sigauke was ordered to resign. Thus, Commissioner Bernard Dumbura from the Police General Headquarters has been appointed as a new police chief.
Chief Superintendent George Nenguwo, the district police chief for Marondera, was also suspended. Chief Superintendent Didymus Masiwa Sakarombe from Mashonaland West police headquarters will take over Nenguwo’s post.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s decision to remove police officers has been made as they could not crush the protests.
