SA Municipal Workers Union’s (Samwu) official in Limpopo has allegedly become a victim of a contract killing as an unknown suspect shot him dead in Thohoyandou.
According to the union statement, Deputy provincial secretary Roland Mani suffered fatal injuries days after his colleague — former Limpopo chairperson Timson Tshililo — became a hitman’s target and was assassinated. However, Tshililo managed to survive and is receiving treatment in a local hospital.
‘We are definitely convinced that the two shootings are related as both victims are employees of the Vhembe district municipality and have been in the forefront of protests which led to the removal of mayors who illegally invested money with the now liquidated VBS Mutual Bank,’’ the Union said.
The Thohoyandou shooting is the fourth incident connected to Samwu provincial officials. The series began last year with the murdering of Thabang Maupa, a local councilor at Tubatse Municipality — the police found him dead in his own car. SAPS investigation has been underway since then, but no arrests have been made yet.
